Emo
I read a story in the New York Times Sunday Magazine last year about an artist named "Sufjan Stevens." He is what The Times called an "emo boy" musician. I don't know what this means, but i wanted to listen to his CD, "Greetings from Michigan, the Great Lakes State."
Of all the varied music i have heard over the years, this may be the most different. But, i liked it, so i got it.
Now he has released a new CD, "Illinois(e)" (his goal is to do a CD on every state).
I think most people that listen to his music will either like it or hate it.

Emo is short for "Emotional Rock". Artists include Bright Eyes, Promise Ring, that tool John Mayer, Dashboard Confessional etc. There are other derivatives of emo as well, like Emo-core which is like hardcore and emo hybrid. It can actually be pretty cool, such as Alexisonfire.
By the way, here is a review of the album on Pitchfork...

Pitchfork is a great source for finding new music, just watch out. They tend to be elitist and tend to like bands that are like the Arcade Fire. Their writing also leaves something to be desired a lot of the time. None the less, great way to discover new music :)
I see what you mean about being elitist. It looks like a comprehensive site though.
